About Pomorie
Key facts about Pomorie — ancient Anchialus, mediaeval Anchialos, now a spa resort of 13,000.
The city of salt
Pomorie lies on a narrow, rocky peninsula stretching 3.5 km into the Black Sea, 20 km north-east of Burgas. The town sits between Burgas Bay to the south and Pomorie Lake to the north — a hyper-saline lagoon of about 8 km². Around 13,000 people live in the town.
Since antiquity Pomorie has been known for salt production and winemaking. Today the town combines tourism with balneotherapy — the black-sand beach and healing mud from Pomorie Lake draw visitors with joint and skin ailments. Alongside spa centres, the town hosts dozens of wineries and rakia distilleries selling local "Dimyat" and "Chervyen Misket" varietals.
Pomorie is the seat of its eponymous municipality of about 28,000 people. The area includes the salty Pomorie Lake (a Natura 2000 site and key migration stop for pelicans and flamingos), the Thracian Beehive Tomb and St. George's Monastery with its healing spring.
