Founded in Burgas in 1924, the Deweko factory (today HemusMark AD) was the first pencil factory in Southeastern Europe and, from 1937, the official supplier to the Bulgarian Monarch.
Burgas sits at the westernmost point of the bay that bears its name on the Black Sea, ringed by three lakes, with a summer that runs from mid-May to late September.
The city sits 30 m above sea level on an area of 253.6 km². To the north, south and west it is ringed by the Burgas Lakes — Burgas (Vaya, the largest natural lake in Bulgaria), the hypersaline Atanasovsko and the freshwater Mandrensko — with the Poda Protected Area nearby. Under the Köppen system the climate is humid subtropical. Summer lasts about five months, from mid-May to late September. Snow is possible between December and March, but rare.
Summer averages 24°C, sea water 23–30°C. Winter 4–5°C. Records: 42.8°C (June 2007) and −21.6°C (January 1942).

5 km north of the centre, between the sea station and the Sarafovo district — a 1.8 km wide beach with dunes and fewer crowds than the central one. A favourite with surfers.

In the eponymous district 8 km north of the centre, next to Burgas Airport — about 1.5 km of sand and shallow water. Seaside restaurants, ideal for children.

In the southern district 7 km from the centre — small rocky coves with crystal-clear water, great for snorkelling. Deeper entry, suited to swimmers.

12 km south of the centre in Rosenets Park — a wild beach with dunes, part of a nature zone. No facilities or sunbeds — bring everything you need.

15 km south in the eponymous nature park — a row of small sandy and pebble coves among pine forest. Cape Chukalyata is a favourite sunset spot.

In the Sarafovo district — paid and free zones, lifeguards, a cycle path and stylish beach venues.

A small sheltered cove next to Sarafovo Port — calm water, fine sand and the romance of fishing boats.

Black, iron- and magnetite-rich sand next to the Burgas saltworks — combine sea bathing with curative mud and lye.

Kraimorie's northernmost strip — Bay of Burgas panorama, easy access and parking nearby.

Kraimorie's southernmost strip — soft sand, clear water and quiet away from the crowds.

A small beach at the Chengene Skele fishing village — boats, seafood, a camper zone and water sports.
