About Aheloy
Key facts about Aheloy — a town of about 3,100 residents, part of Pomorie municipality, a quiet family resort with a rich history.
The town between the river and the sea
Aheloy is a town and summer resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, on the left bank of the Aheloy river mouth, 25 km north-east of Burgas. Administratively it is part of Pomorie municipality and lies about 15 km south of Nessebar. The population is around 3,100, multiplying several times in summer.
Aheloy is a quiet alternative to the busy neighbouring resorts — Sunny Beach to the north and Pomorie to the north-west. The beach is about 1.5 km of sand with a gentle slope, suited to families with children. The local economy rests on tourism, fishing and agriculture in the surrounding area.
The town is best known for the 917 Battle of Aheloy, in which the Bulgarian army led by Tsar Simeon I the Great dealt the Byzantines a crushing defeat — one of the greatest victories in Bulgarian mediaeval history. The battlefield is marked today by a modest monument nearby.
