Bulgaria's largest seaside resort

Sunny Beach is Bulgaria's largest seaside resort and one of the largest on the Balkan peninsula. It sits in a shallow Black Sea bay, 35 km from Burgas, adjoining the old town of Nessebar to the south. At its heart is an 6 km continuous beach of fine golden sand with a gentle slope into the sea.

The resort was founded in 1958 as a planned socialist-era holiday complex. In the 1960s–70s it became a favourite summer destination for guests from Eastern Europe. After 1989 it modernised and expanded to over 150 hotels, dozens of water parks, restaurants, nightclubs and thousands of rental apartments.

The beach has been declared a national tourist site. The resort is Bulgaria's most popular international destination — over 1.5 million tourists a year, mostly from the UK, Germany, Poland, Romania and Russia.
