The city of salt

Pomorie sits on a narrow rocky peninsula extending 3.5 km into the Black Sea, about 20 km north-east of Burgas. The town lies between the Bay of Burgas to the south and Lake Pomorie to the north — a hypersaline lagoon of around 8.5 km² with a salinity of 60–80‰ (almost four times that of the sea). The town has a population of around 13,000 (NSI, 2021 census).

Since antiquity Pomorie has been known for salt production and winemaking. Today the town combines tourism with balneotherapy — the black-sand beach and healing mud from Pomorie Lake draw visitors with joint and skin ailments. Alongside spa centres, the town hosts dozens of wineries and rakia distilleries selling local "Dimyat" and "Chervyen Misket" varietals.

Pomorie is the centre of the eponymous municipality, with 28,572 inhabitants (NSI, 2021). The area is home to the salty Pomorie Lake (a protected area, Natura 2000 and Ramsar site — a migration spot for pelicans and flamingos), the Ancient Domed Tomb (also known as the "Thracian Domed Tomb", in fact a Roman heroon from the 2nd–4th century) and St. George Monastery with its healing spring.
