Alexander Pushkin

Bronze statue of the Russian poet in the Sea Garden.

The distinguished artist Petko Zadgorski (1902–1974) is a foundational figure in the development of fine art in Burgas. His most iconic sculptural work is the monument to Alexander Pushkin, which has graced the alleys of the Sea Garden since 1952 and remains to this day a favourite walking spot for tourists and residents alike.

In addition to being a remarkable artist, Zadgorski was the first chairman of the Burgas Society of Artists and a long-time teacher who trained and inspired a constellation of celebrated painters, including Georgi Baev, Genko Genkov and Todor Atanasov. He also served as curator of the Burgas City Art Gallery, which today proudly bears his name in tribute. For his exceptional contribution to the spiritual and cultural development of the municipality, in 2004 Petko Zadgorski was named an honorary citizen of Burgas.
