Burgas Saltworks
Ancient salt-evaporation lagoons near Burgas — flamingos, healing mud and pink salt pans.
Set on the north-eastern edge of Burgas, the hypersaline Atanasovsko Lake is a unique natural complex. It combines exceptional biodiversity with centuries-old industrial traditions and natural-healing opportunities. The lake is split between a strict-protection reserve in its northern part and a protected area to the south, covering an area of about 17 sq km.

Ornithological importance
Known as "Bulgaria's bird paradise," the lake is a key point on the Via Pontica migration route. 316 bird species have been recorded here, of which 14 are globally threatened (such as the Dalmatian pelican and the red-breasted goose). The shallow waters and dykes create ideal conditions for nesting, wintering and resting for water-loving species.

Eco-friendly salt extraction
Traditional salt production in the area, dating back to 1906, is an excellent example of eco-friendly business. The process not only spares the environment, but also supports bird populations, providing protected sites for their breeding.

Healing mud and brine
As a by-product of salt extraction, the lake offers invaluable health resources. The Black Sea brine and lake-bottom healing mud have proven therapeutic properties. Their rich mineral content has a beneficial effect on conditions of the locomotor system, the peripheral nervous system and various skin issues, turning the destination into an increasingly sought-after centre for spa and wellness tourism.
