European Maritime Day

European Maritime Day has been celebrated each year on 20 May since 2008. It was established jointly by the European Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission as part of the EU's Integrated Maritime Policy launched in 2007. The day aims to encourage better stewardship of coastal zones, seas and oceans. On 20 May, tribute is paid to "Maritime Europe" — all maritime sectors and activities are placed in the spotlight so that European citizens can grasp the real outreach and variety of sea-related activities going on across Europe. As a major Black Sea port, Burgas takes part in the day's initiatives.
