About Sunny Beach
Key facts about Sunny Beach — about 8 km of beach, more than 400 hotels with over 300,000 beds, a pine belt and easy access to the Old Town of Nessebar.
Bulgaria's largest seaside resort
Sunny Beach is the largest Bulgarian seaside resort and one of the largest on the Balkan Peninsula. It lies in a shallow Black Sea bay 35 km north of Burgas and borders directly on the Old Town of Nessebar to the south. The heart of the resort is around 8 km of unbroken beach with fine golden sand, 30–60 m wide, with a gentle entry to the sea.
The resort was founded by Decree No. 120 of the Council of Ministers of 30 June 1958 as a planned socialist holiday complex. During the 1960s and 1970s it became a favourite summer destination for visitors from Eastern Europe. After 1989 the resort was privatised and grew into more than 400 hotels with over 300,000 beds, several large water parks, hundreds of restaurants and bars, and thousands of holiday apartments.
The beach has been declared a national tourist site. The resort is Bulgaria's most popular international destination — over 1.5 million tourists a year, mostly from the UK, Germany, Poland, Romania and Russia.
