Ropotamo Reserve
About 5 km north of Primorsko — a nature reserve declared in 1940 and extended in 1992 to around 1,000 ha. It includes longoz (liana-rich) forests, the Arkutino marsh, St Thomas Island and sand dunes. Since 1975 Arkutino, and since 2002 the entire 'Ropotamo Complex', have been on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. The river mouth is home to over 250 bird species.
Stamopolu Marsh
A small marshy area behind North Beach — home to water lilies, frogs and rare birds. The name comes from the Greek 'στόμα' (mouth) and is associated with an underwater spring on the bottom that constantly renews the marsh's water. It is designated a natural landmark and forms part of the Ropotamo Reserve; it is reached via a wooden walkway and observation deck.
South Beach dunes
Tall sand dunes — among the best-preserved dune complexes on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, reaching about 19 metres in height. They were declared a natural landmark under the name 'Sand Dunes – Perla' in 1984. Only walking on the marked paths is permitted, owing to the rare psammophilic plants.
International Youth Centre
Georgi Dimitrov International Youth Centre — a vast complex on South Beach with dozens of holiday buildings and its own infrastructure, established in the socialist period as a summer-camp hub for young people from over 50 countries. The open-air cinema opened in 1972. After 1989 the complex was privatised and converted into family hotels.
Beglik Tash
A Thracian rock sanctuary from the 2nd millennium BC — a complex of megalithic blocks discovered in 2003. 6 km north-west of Primorsko, accessible by car or tour.
St Thomas Island (Snake Island)
A small rocky island about 7 km north of Primorsko, within the Ropotamo Reserve. Also known as Snake Island for its abundant water snakes. It is the only place in Bulgaria with wild prickly pears (opuntias), planted in 1933 by order of Tsar Boris III. A Thracian sanctuary, an early Byzantine settlement and a medieval monastery have been uncovered on the island.
