Landmarks

Chernomorets is more about atmosphere and nature than big museums. The main landmarks — Cape Akra, the pedestrian bridge to the harbour and the fishing "carapana" — fill a good day without rushing.

Cape Akra and the early Byzantine fortress

The rocky cape about 1.8 km north-west of the centre — the site of an early Byzantine fortress from the second half of the 5th century AD (under Emperor Anastasius I), built over an older Greek settlement of the 7th–6th centuries BC. About a third of the walls and buildings now lie underwater in the surrounding bays (St Nicholas and Vromos), where underwater archaeological investigations are carried out. On the cape itself there is a chapel and an excellent view of Sozopol.

The fishing harbour

A small harbour on the peninsula next to the centre. It is linked to the town by a long pedestrian bridge that is itself a landmark. Fresh fish is unloaded here in the morning, and in the evening fishermen and sea lovers gather.

St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Church

A small Revival-era church in the centre of Chernomorets, consecrated in 1858 by sailors who survived a storm with the saint's miraculous icon. In 1995 the church burned down in a fire and was rebuilt with funds raised by local people. The patron saint of sailors and fishermen is celebrated on 6 December — when new boats are also blessed.

The pedestrian bridge

A wooden bridge of about 300 m linking the old centre with the peninsula and the harbour. It is especially striking at sunset — boats silhouetted against the red sky. A favourite spot for photos.

Lake Mandra

About 5 km north of Chernomorets — a large reservoir, part of Natura 2000 and one of the most important Important Bird Areas (IBA) in Bulgaria. The Dalmatian pelican, the pygmy cormorant and over 250 bird species nest and winter here. Excellent for a half-day excursion.

Cape St. Nicholas

On the St Nicholas peninsula — a small rocky terrace with a panoramic bench and an outdoor altar, near the northern point of Akin. A favourite spot for the sunset among locals, quieter than the interior of the Akra fortress and with a direct view of the island of St Ivan off Sozopol.
