About Chernomorets
Key facts about Chernomorets — about 2,000 permanent residents (2021 census), part of Sozopol Municipality, the closest family beach to Burgas.
The town between Burgas and Sozopol
Chernomorets is a small seaside town 20 km south of Burgas, set on a peninsula between Cape Akra to the south and Gradina beach to the north. It is part of Sozopol municipality, 8 km north of Sozopol itself, and the nearest family beach for Burgas — the bus or car journey takes about 25 minutes.
Chernomorets has around 2,000 permanent residents (2021 census), but during the summer season it grows to about 15,000. The central beach is around 1.5 km of fine sand and is one of the widest near Burgas. The town is well suited both for a day trip from Burgas and for a quieter family holiday with children, with access to the livelier Sozopol just 15 minutes to the south.
The history of Chernomorets begins with an ancient Greek settlement from the 7th–6th century BC and the early Byzantine fortress of Akra (5th–6th century AD) on the St. Nicholas peninsula in the northwestern part of the town. Today there is a long pedestrian bridge to the harbour, a small fish market and evening walks along the beach. Lake Mandra is also nearby, as is Vromos Bay — known for its mining environmental history (tailings from the Rosen flotation plant during 1954–1968), cleaned up in the late 1990s. Chernomorets is a good base for exploring the southern coast without being as crowded as Sunny Beach.
